Date Posted 04/02/2018
Philanthropy-Foundation Relations
Employment Type Fulltime
Application Deadline Open until filled

The News Literacy Project (NLP) is looking for a full-time foundation and corporate relations officer (FCRO) to lead our philanthropic efforts with grant-making institutions. This is a role that requires considerable personal initiative and a “roll up the sleeves” startup mindset. The successful candidate will be presented with a unique opportunity: inviting major corporations and foundations to join the important work of embedding news literacy in the American education experience.

About NLP

The News Literacy Project is a national nonpartisan education nonprofit that works with educators and journalists to teach middle school and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. Our central offering is the checkology® virtual classroom, an online e-learning hub. Since the platform was introduced in May 2016, more than 12,000 educators have registered to use it in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, three U.S. territories and 91 other countries. We are currently adding staff to support significant user growth with the launch of the checkology® 2.0 platform for the 2018-19 school year.

About the position

The foundation and corporate relations officer is a member of NLP’s Development/Revenue Team and reports directly to the chief operating officer (COO). You’ll be familiar with foundation and corporate giving policies and strategies as well as conversant with the general American educational landscape. You’ll hit the ground running, be unafraid to experiment and be a highly motivated self-starter who displays personal integrity, has a sense of fun and is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.

In this job, you will:

  • Design and execute the organizational strategy to increase philanthropic gifts from both corporate and foundation sources, including stewarding existing donors and identifying and cultivating new donors.
  • Secure a targeted value of new and renewed gifts each year, with an eye on multiyear gifts.
  • Support the CEO and the COO with their targeted corporate and foundation portfolios.
  • Manage all portfolio support work, including proposals, grant reports and the donor database.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team on the design and production of the messaging and collateral needed to support portfolio efforts.
  • Collaborate with the COO and the Development/Revenue Team as needed to ensure a cohesive approach to revenue generation across the organization and to ensure that grant requirements are tracked and met.

The ideal candidate also will have most or all of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in identifying, cultivating and stewarding large, multiyear corporate and foundation gifts.
  • Strong writing skills (particularly grant proposals and reports).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of $2M+ with limited supervision.
  • Direct user familiarity with donor databases.
  • Strong and proactive communication skills with team, contractors and funders.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience with virtual work environment (both technology tools and personal skills).

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is based on experience and qualifications. NLP offers outstanding benefits, including a competitive salary, generous time off, health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan and more.

This position is virtual and can be based anywhere in the United States. Regular travel (25%-40%) will be required for meetings with NLP staff in Washington, D.C., and with funders across the country.

To apply, send a thoughtful cover letter (with salary expectations) and a resume (including portfolio totals) to NLPjobs@newslit.orgwith “FCRO” in the subject line.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. ET on Monday, April 30. We hope to hire as quickly as possible for a start date before July 1.
