Duties & Responsibilities
The Foundation and Corporate Relations Officer (Officer) works with the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard Law School's (CHLPI) executive team, administrative team, and clinical staff to raise funding to support CHLPI's mission to advocate for legal, regulatory, and policy reforms to improve the health of underserved populations, with a focus on the needs of low-income people living with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

The Officer will design, implement, and manage a strategy for the cultivation and stewardship of foundations, corporations, and government agencies. The Officer will maintain and grow the funding portfolio, which is currently $2 million, helping to diversify the organization's funding base and support and expand CHLPI's diverse program portfolio of health and food law and policy initiatives. The Officer will be responsible for crafting competitive proposals and developing progress reports for a variety of funders. The Officer should have a demonstrated track record of grants received, capacity to quickly develop expertise and the ability to write about CHLPI's various program areas, and bring enthusiasm and creativity to the organization's advancement agenda.

Responsibilities include:

  • developing, drafting, and editing grant proposals, reports, and other fundraising collateral and working with staff to ensure high quality and competitive proposal content;
  • designing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive and proactive development strategy including an annual grants calendar;
  • staying current on funding and philanthropic trends, and performing and managing ongoing prospect research regarding foundation, corporate, and governmental agencies to identify and evaluate potential new funding sources and prospects;
  • representing CHLPI to external audiences such as program officers, and providing stewardship to current donors, including regular written updates, required reports, and other communications;
  • researching new prospects, building stewardship strategies for new prospects, and providing guidance and opportunities for the executive team to strengthen existing funder relationships and cultivate new funder prospects;
  • engaging foundation officers and other prospects and arranging for onsite tours and meetings for supporters;
  • managing all related monthly deadlines for funder and donor meetings; and
  • working to meet all related deadlines for proposal submissions and reporting.

Basic Qualifications
BA/BS or equivalent experience required. Five or more years of experience in a development environment with a successful track record in generating significant grant revenue from foundations, corporations, and governmental agencies.

Additional Qualifications
This position requires a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of fundraising principles and practices, a demonstrated high level of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, time management, and success in fundraising. The Officer should possess experience with proposal writing; superior writing and editing skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and achieve work goals; ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, working well under pressure and meeting deadlines; knowledge of fundraising information sources and institutional donors; knowledge of fundraising research techniques and strategies for prospect fundraising; experience handling multiple assignments, working individually and in teams; demonstrated ability to diversify funding streams; and an ability to develop, implement, monitor, and meet income goals. Familiarity or experience with relevant health and/or food issues and a passion for social justice a plus but not required. Experience in cultivating and stewarding individual donors and securing major gifts is a plus.

Additional Information

This is a term appointment, currently through May 31, 2019, with potential for renewal, subject to funding and departmental need.
