PJ Library®, an award-winning international Jewish family engagement program created by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), strengthens Jewish identities and serves as an outreach and family engagement vehicle, using bedtime story books as its core. In partnership with hundreds of philanthropists and Jewish organizations, PJ Library delivers the gift of free, high-quality Jewish books each month to families raising Jewish children ages six months through eleven years.


The Harold Grinspoon Foundation, a results-driven, entrepreneurial non-profit organization headquartered in Agawam, Massachusetts, is seeking a Director of Development to lead the PJ Library fundraising strategy and development operations in New York City, Long Island and Westchester. This position is responsible for the development strategy and financial stability of PJ Library in New York including major giving and grassroots giving. The Director of Development will report to the Director of PJ Library in New York and work closely with HGF leadership.

The position will be based in New York City.


Major Gifts Program: The Director of Development is responsible for designing and implementing a fundraising strategy, building on a portfolio of existing major gifts, to grow the budget by an additional $1 million a year within the next two years. The Director of Development will close gifts and bring in other staff and trustees when appropriate.

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic support by developing and maintaining relationships with prospects

  • Plan parlor meetings and other cultivation and fundraising events

  • Explore the potential of lay committees and/or leadership groups and coordinate the necessary resources to launch, in partnership with HGF leadership

  • Ensure proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship of donors

  • Develop campaign materials, including case statements and proposals

  • Work in collaboration with other staff to prepare reports and prospect research materials

  • Work in collaboration with development efforts for global PJ Library to learn from and inform best practices


Grassroots Giving: For long-term stability, the Director of Development will set a strategy for smaller, ongoing support from PJ Library families and friends.

  • Develop a direct outreach and solicitation strategy for subscriber families to build on and extend existing grassroots efforts

  • Utilize the existing moves management system to cultivate prospects using Raiser’s Edge fundraising software

Development Operations and Management: Create systems and processes in the PJ Library New York office that leverage the HGF home office development team and systems.

  • Grow and manage a development team, including development support staff

  • Assess and manage development operations, focusing on Raiser’s Edge

  • Implement processes for utilizing RE and development systems, effectively identifying what reports and lists are needed and working with colleagues in the HGF home office to ensure accuracy and consistency

  • Assess staffing needs and work flow with home office colleagues


Donor Communications: Build out the donor communications strategy for New York and oversee the development communications calendar and donor materials

  • Plan and oversee all donor communications, using national and international materials as a baseline and building a New York-specific style

Other Development Activities:

  • Develops familiarity with all HGF programs and represents those projects with prospects in New York as relevant

  • Manage special development-related projects and events as necessary

  • Growth opportunities include additional PJ Library and HGF fundraising and partnership responsibility, in addition to building a development team in New York

  • Oversee and coordinate complex initiatives and events, including larger PJ Library NY events that cross departments


  • Knowledge of development/fundraising concepts and appropriate solicitation techniques

  • Experience soliciting five and six figure gifts or equivalent relevant experience

  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills

  • Strong verbal and professional written communication skills

  • Project management skills

  • Experience with Jewish philanthropic networks in New York

  • Ability to interact with diplomacy and tact with influential clients and diverse groups

  • Ability to maintain relationships with significant and prominent individuals

  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality

  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and Salesforce preferred

Salary is commensurate with experience.
