Director of Planned Giving

Kenyon College is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Director of Planned Giving. The Director will oversee the College’s planned giving program, garnering support from alumni, parents and friends. Responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies to promote charitable activity through estate planning vehicles, tangible personal property and other planned giving arrangements. Oversee the creation of marketing efforts designed to communicate the benefits of planned giving opportunities, and work with colleagues in the Advancement Division to identify, cultivate, solicit, record and steward major and planned gifts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership: Direct all aspects of the planned giving program. Develop strategies to build awareness of planned giving options, positioning the Office of Planned Giving as a resource. In consultation with the AVP for Development establish goals, develop and implement effective plans, and monitor activity and progress toward goals. Prepare regular reports and manage the budget. Collaborate with others in the Development department to identify opportunities to inspire current and prospective donors to maximize their support through the use of planned giving vehicles.

Technical: Negotiate and close a wide range of major and planned gifts using vehicles such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder and lead trusts, testamentary trusts, IRA rollovers, life insurance policies and retained life estates. Maintain expertise in tax and legal aspects of charitable giving. Communicate with prospective donors and advisors, analyze and prepare gift proposals, gift benefit illustrations, bequest language and other gift agreements to secure deferred gifts. Ensure planned gifts are appropriately received and acknowledged. Work with other offices across campus as needed.

Marketing: Design and implement programs and marketing to increase and sustain a wide variety of planned gifts. Working with in-house staff and vendors, develop a comprehensive marketing plan. Track and analyze marketing results. Coordinate the participation of leaders, volunteers and advancement staff, as appropriate, in planned giving activities. Prepare educational presentations -- and present them to -- volunteer committees, staff and others.

Identify, Cultivate and Solicit: Travel to develop personal philanthropic relationships with potential planned giving donors. Personally manage 50-75 donor relationships, designing cultivation and solicitation strategies.

Collaborate: Create educational programming and work with development officers, providing support with complex gift discussions. Respond to inquiries regarding planned giving, tax and related legal issues. Partner with the Director of the 50th Reunion to maximize opportunities with alumni during the window for this milestone reunion. Oversee stewardship of existing planned giving commitments together with development officers and Donor Relations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder and lead trusts, pooled income fund gifts, testamentary trusts, life insurance policies and retained life estates. Knowledge of complex gifts, including the use of privately held stock, bitcoin, public-private partnerships and others.

  • Knowledge of estate planning and federal and state tax law as applied to charitable giving.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to clearly communicate gift planning strategies to potential donors and development colleagues and work well with professional advisors and lawyers.

  • Ability to travel and attend meetings and functions at various hours as required.

  • Comfort level with the operation of computers to prepare reports and written documents using word processing, spreadsheets, databases and other programs.

  • Understanding of and ability to act upon fundraising principles, ethics, and trends in higher education.

  • Working well under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Utilizing strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to adapt to changing situations.


Bachelor’s degree and preferably an advanced degree in law, tax, accounting or other related field. Three to five years in planned giving or experience in a related field such as legal, tax or financial planning. Development experience is desirable. Excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to create compelling cases for support and digest and synthesize information into concise language. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Travel is required and other duties as assigned.
