Job Description

 

The Vice President for Annual Giving leads and directs the development and implementation of immediate and long-range annual giving strategies and assists in building a culture of philanthropy for the University of Connecticut Foundation that is focused on aggressive metrics related to dollars raised, donor growth and overall annual giving program health. S/he collaborates with leaders and colleagues within the University, UConn Health, Regional Campuses and university college/units to provide strategy, support, best practices, and recommendations to ensure a comprehensive solicitation approach for their donors and/or grateful patients through a variety of omnichannel solicitation vehicles. This position is responsible for annual giving’s marketing strategy and special campaigns, including Raise UConn, Women & Philanthropy, Student Philanthropy, Giving Tuesday, and UConn Gives.

S/he conducts applicable evaluations and marketing analysis in order to link annual giving strategies to development, principal gifts, and alumni relations objectives, defines benchmarks and metrics, researches annual giving trends among alumni and donors, and ensures all giving solicitations are tracked in the Foundation’s CRM. This position will manage the necessary partner and vendor relationships to maximize revenue and provide UConn’s donors and prospects an optimal philanthropic experience. The Vice President provides oversight for the following areas which serve as the university’s central annual giving and special campaigns resource: digital fundraising, faculty and staff giving, leadership annual giving, the Oak Grove Society, Loyal Jonathan Society, omnichannel solicitation (i.e. direct mail, e-solicitation, text, phone, etc.) and the UConn Foundation’s call center.

The Vice President reports directly to the President and CEO of the UConn Foundation and oversees a team who executes on strategies and priorities for annual giving. As a member of the Foundation’s executive leadership team will be expected to engage with members of the UConn Foundation Board of Directors and other leaders on campus.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide innovative and creative strategies, with a focus on sophisticated data analysis, for annual fundraising to increase alumni participation rates, dollars, and donors.
  • Develop compelling messaging to targeted audiences; this includes all solicitation strategies - direct mail, digital solicitations, and personal solicitations.
  • Build reporting processes for annual giving and special campaigns.
  • Manage a team who run the day-to-day annual giving operations, including leadership giving development officers, strategic solicitations, and project management
  • Collaborate with the stewardship department on strategies for annual giving.
  • Foster the Foundation’s role as a proactive, collaborative, and progressive partner internally and among campus partners.
  • Participate in strategic planning with the Foundation’s President and CEO and executive team.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, foster collaboration, set objectives, establish priorities, manage performance
  • Oversee budget and successfully allocate resources for maximum impact.
  • Manages key relationships with donors and solicits gifts up to $25,000.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills

Key Competencies

  • Strategic thinking to develop and execute innovative solutions.

  • Clear communication through strong verbal, written and listening skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects.
  • Must have reliable personal transportation and valid driver’s license issued from the state in which the employee resides. Employee must maintain, at his or her expense, automotive liability insurance coverage in the minimum amount of $500,000. Evidence of this coverage, in the form of a certificate of automobile insurance must be provided to the Foundation at hire and annually thereafter.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • 10 years of experience in fundraising or similar experience, preferably in higher education
  • Demonstrated track record of management and leadership, as well as a progressive level of responsibility with a fast-paced university, corporation, or organization
  • Experience working with vendors and partners that support annual giving and special campaigns
  • Proficiency in an enterprise CRM, Blackbaud preferred
