HHMI is focused on supporting and moving science forward in a variety of different ways ranging from conducting basic biomedical research, empowering educators, inspiring students, developing the next generation of scientists – even stretching into film and media production. Summary:
The Writer and Content Development Specialist is a part of the editorial and creative team within HHMI Communications, reporting to the Senior Manager of Content Strategy. They are responsible for crafting compelling digital content that effectively communicates HHMI’s mission, vision, people, and programs.
The specialist is excited about developing new, targeted digital content for HHMI’s scientific, educator, and thought leader audiences. They are a strong writer and a versatile creator who is familiar with content marketing fundamentals, strategies, and related tools and platforms. They embrace experimentation, taking a data-driven approach to content creation, analyzing performance, and optimizing their material. And they do their best work in collaboration with others – designers, editors, content strategists and subject matter experts.

What you’ll do:

Write and create different types of content to shareHHMI’s missionand impact, representing our programs and people.

Develop creative digital content for existing and new platforms such as email newsletters and the newly redesigned hhmi.org and collaborate with team members on distribution strategies.

Contribute to an integrated content strategy, collaborating with the broader Communications team to support program launches, competitions, and other critical initiatives.

Propose new topics/series, interview subjects, and write a variety of short- and long-form pieces.

Research audiences and develop strategies to tailor content for different needs.

Collaborate with colleagues to develop and edit thought leadership content.

Utilize equitable and inclusive content practices.

Test new content formats and channels, and develop detailed metrics and post-launch analytics reports, with data-driven recommendations for optimizing content.

Immerse in HHMI to develop a deep understanding of our partners and audiences, understand their content needs, and conduct user research.

Collaborate with colleagues on graphic design, marketing, photography/illustration, social media, editorial, video and more.
What you bring:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field; or combination of education and related experience.

Six to eight years of professional journalism, editorial, writing, or content marketing experience.

A robust portfolio with an array of digital work that demonstrates your ability to tell stories in a variety of formats such as email, blogs, articles, email newsletters, social posts, presentations, videos, and more.

Deep experience using insights to refine and optimize content from analytics and measurement tools (such as Google Analytics) in an editorial environment.

Ability to remain flexible as project focus or project requirements shift.

Keen attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment, with particular emphasis on accuracy, follow-up, and follow-through.

Skill in editing for accuracy, clarity, readability, and consistent tone of voice.

Experience in academia, or a nonprofit, newsroom, or science environment preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

$78,567.20 (minimum) - $98,209.00 (midpoint) - $127,671.70 (maximum)
Pay Type:
Annual
HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
